Wondering when the color of fall leaves will peak in 2022 in Western Mass and where best to see them?
David Angotti can tell you. He is a statistical expert and the co-founder of the site SmokyMountains.com. His love for weather, travel, technology, and the autumn season led him to begin developing a nationwide fall leaf map in 2013 after one Smoky Mountains visitor too many inquired with him when the leaves would be at their fall best.
What started as a fun side-project quickly became the most respected nationwide fall leaf map and one of the best fall resources in the country. Now, tens of millions of people use his map each year to plan everything from photography trips to weddings. But the most common users are simply people wondering when the leaves will peak near them, just like you're wondering when leaves will be at their best fall color in Palmer or Monson!
While not an exact science, the predictive map uses a complex algorithm that carefully analyzes several million data points and outputs approximately 50,000 predictive data pieces to determine when leaves will peak in each part of the country.

While at Macaroni KID Palmer-Monson-Ware we don't use scientific data to determine the best place to go for fall leaf-peeping, we think we have pretty good intel! Here are my family's top five places to go leaf-peeping in Western Mass:

Peaked Mountain
Monson, MA
If you're into hiking, the views can't be beat from the top of Peaked Mountain, beginning now through late October. We visit this special place a few times each year, at least once in the fall. It's kid and dog-friendly, so bring the whole family!
South Hadley Town Center
College Street, South Hadley, MA
If you'd rather take in the colors in a leisurely way, enjoy the quaint New-England feel of South Hadley Center. Between the Village Commons and Mount Holyoke College, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll while sipping on the perfect cup of coffee (or tea).
Old Sturbridge Village
Sturbridge, MA
Go back in time with a visit to Old Sturbridge Village. Not only will you enjoy stunning colors against the backdrop of old America, but kids will love Phantoms by Firelight—an evening filled with live performances, spooky storytelling, crafts for kids, and so much more!
Quabbin Observation Tower
Ware, MA
Overlooking the Quabbin Reservoir, these views will never disappoint, but they are even more spectacular in fall with colors ranging from golden yellow to deep shades of red. Drive or hike up to the observation tower for the best view, but make sure you do it before they close on October 15.
Naumkeag Pumpkin Show
Stockbridge, MA
If you're open to a drive, pack up the family and head to Naumkeag. This public garden & historic home is located in the heart of the Berkshires, so the drive is guaranteed to wow. Purchase tickets in advance for their fall spectacle featuring 1,500 jack-o-lanterns, hot cider, and fall treats!
